Mandatory Cashless Gate Policy & Entry Rules
Since October 2021, South African National Parks (SANParks) has enforced a strict cashless policy at all Boulders Beach turnstile gates. Gate collectors cannot accept paper banknotes or coins under any circumstances. All visitors must pay conservation fees using a valid Visa, Mastercard, or electronic bank card.
If you are traveling from overseas, ensure your bank card has international transactions enabled before departing Cape Town. Transaction receipts are printed directly at the gate. If you purchase entry at the main Seaforth entrance gate, your ticket receipt is valid for entry to both the Foxy Beach boardwalk and the Boulders Beach swimming cove on the same calendar day.
Seasonal Gate Operating Hours & Last Entry Times
Opening and closing times at Boulders Beach vary throughout the year to accommodate seasonal daylight hours and African Penguin roosting cycles:
- Peak Summer (December 1 – January 31): 07:00 AM – 19:30 PM
- Autumn & Spring (February – April & October – November): 08:00 AM – 18:30 PM
- Winter (May 1 – September 30): 08:00 AM – 17:00 PM
Last entry through the turnstile gates is permitted exactly 30 minutes before official park closure. Park rangers strictly clear boardwalks at closing time to ensure nesting seabirds remain undisturbed overnight.
Why Book a Guided Excursion?
Taking a guided tour to Boulders Beach removes the stress of driving along unfamiliar coastal roads and finding parking during peak hours. Professional local drivers know the best departure times to beat coach traffic and secure comfortable views on the boardwalks.
Most tours combine Boulders Beach with major Cape Peninsula attractions like Cape Point Nature Reserve, the Cape of Good Hope, and scenic photo stops at Maidens Cove or Chapman's Peak Drive.
What to Look For in a Tour Package
When selecting a tour, verify whether the SANParks conservation entry ticket (R245 ZAR / ~$13 USD) is included in the total fare or collected separately on arrival. Full-day small group tours (8-10 hours) provide ample time to swim at Boulders Beach and hike Cape Point cliffs without rushing.
Private tours offer flexible schedules, allowing families with children to set their own pace and visit early in the morning before crowds gather.
